Oh god... After listening to an NFT lecture until past one in the morning while working on my project, I had the absolute worst sort of nightmare.

I pull up Ao3 to read some fic, and they’ve purchased an NFT avatar which “represents the collective spirit of transformative fandom.” Yes, with money donated to the platform for upkeep.

Sadly, I don’t remember what this avatar depicts exactly, but it leaves behind an impression of depicting a space rather than a figure, and feels like 2011 vaporwave artwork refurbished with ape colors and packed with furniture elements.

Below, they’ve put up a glowing blue mock-3D holographic bulletin board that displays best in the official iOS app using new Apple rendering technologies, which you’re encouraged to purchase, download, and use instead of the browser page. (Mock-3D in the way that iPhone wallpapers are, shifting around as you tilt your phone. That’s all it is, but the hype for it is insane.)

On this bulletin board... are a handful of pinned tokens which you’re encouraged to purchase for use in the metaverse to signal your fannish identity. They look like little enamel pins in a display board, and I’m assuming they’re for sticking into a meta ita bag, which is implied is also available for purchase with crypto. And yes, there’s an Ao3 logo pin, but also inexplicably, they’ve capitalized on the tumblr logo pin, and what’s tumblr going to do about it? Cry? It’s already out there on the blockchain, out of any one person’s hands, getting minted as needed. If Wattpad or other sites are more your speed, those pins are also available.

This is all on the Ao3 homepage. There’s other mentions of exciting metaverse opportunities and news, but I either don’t pay attention to them or can’t understand what they’re fucking talking about.

I can’t find any way to navigate to my works page or read a fanfic. There’s no mention of new archiving initiatives or other Ao3 news. There’s nothing to do on this homepage aside from feast your eyes on the glorious NFT which represents the collective spirit of transformative fandom and snag some nifty enamel tokens.

I wake up more relieved that it was all a nightmare than if I’d been getting straight up chased, tortured, and murdered.

I was reading your post and somehow skipped over the second part of your sentence in para 1 so halfway through reading I spent the next minute googling AO3 and NFT tryna figure out WHAT'S going on until I realised, wait--

This is one wild dream and I love how detailed it is

The present tense was probably it, tbh. I tried rereading with the post in past tense and it just didn't have the same effect because even if I'd thought it was real, it would've already happened, and therefore there'd be no need for me to pull up AO3 and go searching 😂

infamous broadcast of War of the World that sent people into a panic also did that because Wells mixed present tense into it...

What? That's hilarious

🤔 When I use present tense in writing, I don't know about my fics feeling more immediate. More fast paced, maybe, esp. since present tense lends itself towards contractions while past tense does not. Like a chill and casual little fic, is the vibe I normally get from present tense stories. Stories in past tense feel more... "official", not necessarily more legitimate or real, but more traditional.
