2025-04-07 20:00Friends, family, gremlins. I just got glasses and it feels like taking painkillers for the first time in my life.
No double vision, no weird film over my dominant eye, actual depth perception. The clarity is nice too, but the blurriness when I take them off is so goddamn tolerable that it almost seems a waste to have gone through the trouble. The pain and tiredness without them, however, is on impact. Moment these glasses come off: I'm crippled, I'm in pain, I want to sleep, I want to never do anything ever again, I'm so tired.
I went for a walk and didn't find myself staring at the ground five feet in front of me the whole time! That wasn't the only position that was tolerable and un-exhausting. I felt relaxed. It was actually relaxing again being outside and looking at things.
I am looking directly at the screen. I am reading back what I write as I write, and I don't feel like it's too much effort to bother. Dare I say I can think more clearly? I can imagine actually having the stamina, interest, and mental capacity to start proofreading (or editing, even!) my fics again after writing them. I can open up wikipedia and read, not skim, trying to escape the whole ordeal as fast as possible. I can actually comfortably look at the screen again while typing instead of spacing out in the middle distance between my screen and keyboard. I don't remember the last time any of these things felt comfortable and relaxing.
And this is just the distance prescription, I haven't even gotten my near vision glasses meant for actual computer work yet.
I can practically taste working on my paintings tomorrow and not craving the sweet release of sleep or death after the first hour.

dot and bubble > rogue > 73 yards > space babies > devil's chord > boom
i've enjoyed all of it, but i def think the first three suffer from not establishing a status quo between the doctor and ruby and treating their bond like a done deal. but that's all "positional context within the season." as standalones, they're great.
as absolutely frothing at the mouth silly excited as i am about rogue being gay pride&prejudice, and as pleased as i was to get a very fun by-the-book monster of the week, dot&bubble was genuinely higher stakes writing that i couldn't stop rewatching scenes from over and over just to examine how they did certain things with the script, acting, and directing.
i can't wait for rose noble and UNIT next week

( YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED )One thing they don't tell you about 3D modeling is that if you're left handed, watch out! My right arm feels like I've been lifting weights all day. Don't remember the last time I had to use it this much and with so much fine motor control. My left hand, meanwhile, had so little to do, even with all the many hotkeys that I'm dead-set on committing to memory, that I'd occasionally catch it just idly holding my chin when it was time to press a hotkey. Lazy bastard. He's enjoying this new freedom, I take it.
Eclipse & Blender
2024-04-16 19:231) Learning Blender. Finally, my complete and total inability to play with "normal" camera controls in video games is coming in handy. It's all inverted here, babey!
2) Trying to find an opening in the clouds from which to view the total eclipse and ending up all the way in Nowhere, Ohio was a fun adventure. I don't remember the 1990s movie Twister very well, but I think it was a bit like that.
3) Like I told Cosmic... the eclipse itself looked a lot like Cosmic's artwork.
4) I definitely strained or injured my good eye and got an immediate migraine from viewing said eclipse. I was the only person in my group with any problems, so I'm at a loss as to what went wrong. No holes in my vision so I doubt it's permanent retinal scarring, but it gets tired focusing on distant objects and when I look at the moon for example, I see the moon, and another, fuzzier moon, overlaid slightly to the right. So sharpness is definitely suffering considering I used to see the moon very clearly. Best I can tell, my body just didn't react well to that amount of light, even if I took all the same precautions as everyone else. Eyesight anxiety is exactly why I didn't join my family to go chase the 2017 solar eclipse, but I just couldn't help myself this time. Realllllly wanted to see it. Once was enough. (Edited to add: It's getting better! But it was scary for a while.)

1. Rice or potatoes?
Frankly, I don't eat either often, but I'll def go with rice bc I would crawl five miles through broken glass for a bowl of Choolaah. Their dal makhani owns my soul.
2. Fish or red meat?
Red meat. Recently, I've gotten sick and tired of even my most favorite salmon dishes. I mostly eat chicken bc it's so versatile, but I can't give up the umami savoriness of meat. Oh, but sashimi... Oh no. I love raw fish ;_; UH NEXT QUESTION!!
3. Salad or cooked vegetables?
Can't stand most salads. In the summer I sometimes make a bed of arugula with lemon juice dressing and sliced strawberries, but that's the extent of my tolerance. Roasted, grilled, or blanched vegetables, on the other hand... YUM.
4. Cake or ice cream?
Oooo, toughie! I guess cake bc it's more versatile and I prefer a solid dessert with a morning coffee. Love a fluffy butter cake with Swiss meringue buttercream, or an olive oil cake with bitter blood oranges, you know? Or like a hearty fruitcake pickled up the wazoo in brandy. But when the ice cream cravings start, man, say goodbye to that entire pint container. Now you see it, now you don't.
5. Water, soft drink, wine, beer, or hard alcohol?
Well, I do need plenty of water to survive and thrive as a functioning mammal. But otherwise, hard alcohol. I like a Manhattan, old fashioned, or negroni etc etc with my appetizers and cheese plates. Lambic-style or bourbon barrel quad beers are the only possible contenders. I mostly only drink wine if it's bubbly, if it's for brunch, and even then, I prefer it in a Campari spritz or French 75. Wine/bubbly is hangover city and I want a full day to rehydrate and metabolize it before bedtime. Alcohol in general gives me bad insomnia so it's always water or my mocktail inventions for me after 7pm, thanks. I can be a VERY disappointing bar companion for someone who, uh, clearly likes drinking as much as I do.
Can you tell I'm fasting? I could talk for hours about rich and decadent foods I love. Only 19.5 days until Taurus season.

2024-03-28 19:38Ok, this isn't the same as my wish that someone would put together vocals and lofi/triphop music to Tolkien's lyrics, but yeah, these lofi mixes of the LotR films' scores are nice.
I've been mostly offline for almost two weeks now, limiting myself to less than an hour of hurried email/dreamwidth/googling questions a day. Hoping for enlightenment to reach me, or at least find the time to pick up my bass again, but uh... maybe that happens on week three.
Also, Discord finally broke image links like they were threatening to do. I knew all new images were supposed to be unembeddable and unhotlinkable, but looks like they now also made it take effect retroactively on old images too. I only found out because my entire BruJay comic on Ao3 is broken now. Yikesies. Really need to figure out a good place to host fanart that allows adult content, specifically for Ao3 or DW posting. Can't do tumblr either anymore. Technically, even the company I use to host my portfolio website doesn't allow sexually explicit content, so it's not really an option to host my comic there on some hidden page. I don't want to hide stuff in dark corners and hope for the best. Open to suggestions.
Also (in further "ugh" developments, sorry), Google apparently cares if adults share a bit of written erotica with each other on gdocs? The hell is wrong with the corporatocracy?

I don't follow game news because modern games are painfully disappointing to me more often than not. But I was going to buy myself DLC for another game on the Switch a while back and quite by accident discovered that the first three Tomb Raider games had been remastered and released in February! Phew, can't imagine my life if I'd missed something so exciting! I told my mom about it and we just about salivated at the idea of reliving all those wonderful memories again.

Popping in to quickly archive some thoughts after relistening to Defiance. (Also, I quit tumblr. I'm going to be going through withdrawal for a while.) Anyway, the good stuff:
Okay, funny thing about the Defiance showdown where they're Shakespearean actor-ing at each other in the moments before Raziel rips out Kain's heart - not only did Kain not know where the Heart of Darkness had been all this time, which was a huge oversight on his part/impressive deception on Mortanius's part, but Kain also... didn't know? didn't plan for? overlooked? was distracted from? ...the lack of a temporal distortion.
There AREN'T two Reavers in that time and place - there is ONE wraith blade Soul Reaver attached to Raziel's soul, yes, BUT. Kain holds the sword that is still the BLOOD Reaver, the one he ripped out of Raziel's body before it could absorb Raziel's soul.
Meanwhile, the imbued second Soul Reaver that COULD have derailed the course of history as it was currently written lies either really close but not nearly close enough, somewhere within the very same cathedral in which they're yelling at each other, OR young!Kain has already only just retrieved it and carried it many miles away to the pillars or to Willendorf (or perhaps even 50 years into the past.)
Without the temporal distortion of TWO Soul Reavers in close proximity, Kain literally CANNOT convince Raziel to not rip his heart out bc in THIS time stream, it IS inevitable.
Outmaneuvered by the Elder God and his convenient little portal even as he recognized the so-called "Oracle" as likely deceitful. WHY Kain didn't notice that there was only one sword present... I don't know. Interesting. Because in SR2 Kain definitely demonstrated awareness of how paradoxes work. It seems he's put too much faith in Raziel's "free will," which, I don't know if it needs to be pointed out to Kain, isn't without serious limits.
Moebius for his part, when Raziel next encounters him, also maintains the lie, that Raziel actually had a choice in that moment, and actively CHOSE to kill Kain. Raziel didn't. That moment was predestined and inescapable. Only one Reaver present.
To what end? At first I thought Moebius just hated Kain so much that it gratified him to believe that Raziel had a choice and CHOSE to kill Kain. Then I remembered who the hell I was thinking about. Moebius, liar extraordinaire. But why? Why bother, if Kain's already dead? I suppose to keep Raziel on his course. Like he's going to play one last - ahhhhhh! Yea. With MOaebius's goad ringing in his head, Raziel will now hurry to play "his" card - revive Janos Austin so that with Vorador's impending execution, the vampires don't go extinct. This of course, is in actuality the next step in the Hylden's plans. Not that Moebius has any loyalty to the Hylden, but they're useful enough.

thefridayfive today but since I don't have an opinion on any of the questions or celebrate either of the holidays mentioned, I went digging for an older set of questions that might be more fun for me.
1. What song do you live for at the moment?
I'm really loving "Big Boy" and "Punk Rock Loser" by Viagra Boys (again) and "you used to love jazz" by j'san.
2. Is there a band or artist that you attach to a particular memory? What memory is it?
I have a lot of band-memory pairings, but the most prominent is Smashing Pumpkins (specifically "Ava Adore," "Tear," and "Pug" off Adore) and staying up most of the night on a school night in thenth grade because I didn't want to sleep, I wanted to draw Dark from screenshots of D.N.Angel. I did this for a couple weeks straight, like a crazy person. (My best friend stopped being friends with me for a while after this because she was mad that I suddenly get really good at drawing in anime style bc until then, anime style had been her thing, and I usually drew more realistically. LOL (It's fine, we made up and still occasionally catch up.))
3. What's the most beautiful song lyric you've ever heard?
Mmmm... that's really hard to say. Depends on the definition of beauty, and there's still too many contestants that way, but I guess the thing that comes to mind is this Russian 90s pop song titled "Artist Who Paints Rain" that I translated here.
4. If you could choose any band/artist to cover any song, which combination would you pick?
OKAY OKAY this is the question that jumped out at me and made me choose this set because I was walking in the woods this afternoon and thinking, "Man, I really wish one of those lofi R&B/triphop artists would put music to Tolkien songs, that shit would absolutely keep me entertained for years." God, I'd killlllll for that give me!!

thefridayfive today but since I don't have an opinion on any of the questions or celebrate either of the holidays mentioned, I went digging for an older set of questions that might be more fun for me.1. What song do you live for at the moment?
I'm really loving "Big Boy" and "Punk Rock Loser" by Viagra Boys (again) and "you used to love jazz" by j'san.
2. Is there a band or artist that you attach to a particular memory? What memory is it?
I have a lot of band-memory pairings, but the most prominent is Smashing Pumpkins (specifically "Ava Adore," "Tear," and "Pug" off Adore) and staying up most of the night on a school night in thenth grade because I didn't want to sleep, I wanted to draw Dark from screenshots of D.N.Angel. I did this for a couple weeks straight, like a crazy person. (My best friend stopped being friends with me for a while after this because she was mad that I suddenly get really good at drawing in anime style bc until then, anime style had been her thing, and I usually drew more realistically. LOL (It's fine, we made up and still occasionally catch up.))
3. What's the most beautiful song lyric you've ever heard?
Mmmm... that's really hard to say. Depends on the definition of beauty, and there's still too many contestants that way, but I guess the thing that comes to mind is this Russian 90s pop song titled "Artist Who Paints Rain" that I translated here.
4. If you could choose any band/artist to cover any song, which combination would you pick?
OKAY OKAY this is the question that jumped out at me and made me choose this set because I was walking in the woods this afternoon and thinking, "Man, I really wish one of those lofi R&B/triphop artists would put music to Tolkien songs, that shit would absolutely keep me entertained for years." God, I'd killlllll for that give me!!
5. What's the best concert you've ever attended?
Ummmm... maybe Depeche Mode? Maybe Muse. Maybe Emilie Autumn. Maybe Rammstein. One of those.
When will my mobile browser "dr" autofill come back from the war? ("War": It currently autofills to the Dracula Daily site, from all the times I checked last year's archive to see when the next update will be, as well as backreading some entries when my email client fucked up.) I was thinking while browsing the users that show up in the Batfam/Batman interests page and again finding the usual amount of people actively posting on the topic (0-1) that MAN I filled out a LOT of interests on my profile in the hopes that it would help me connect better, but perhaps I would be better off paring it down to only those that I would foam at the mouth to talk or fool around about. You know, so that anyone who ended up on my journal over a mutual interest would actually see that interest in action. But when I went to my profile, I just started foaming at the mouth thinking about all the hypothetical conversations I COULD be having about those topics, even if I'm currently not, and perhaps never actually have before, so I just left it all alone as is. 😂
Maybe I should go through as a posting theme/prompt list and just write up or doodle conversation starters on everything in my interests list. Everyone else will be doing Snowflake in January (me too tho honestly) and I'll just be having imaginary conversations with myself about *throws dart* about how AGENT COOPER SHOULDN'T HAVE ENTERED THE LODGE AT THE END OF SEASON 2, AND THIS WAS OBVIOUS TO ANYOBE WHO HAD BEEN PAYING ATTENTION AHHH. *the mouth foaming begins*

2023-12-04 12:12I genuinely am averse to making new posts while my inbox is bursting at the seams with messages I haven't replied to, so I'll be trying to reply, mark-as-read, or delete things this month. (Maybe a few messages each day?) If you get a reply on something ancient, idk sorry, my wires got crossed or I had trouble simply deleting the message without acknowledging it.
Now if only it didn't take me on average 30 minutes of hemming and hawing to reply to each message, wondering about the appropriateness of my tone and reply length, or whether the message even warrants me bothering the other person with a reply... Or if I didn't have a habit of reading messages, replying in my head in detail, and then thinking "Well, I don't have time to type that all up right now" but mentally marking the reply off as ✔ Fully Written; No Further Action Needed khhhhhh. (Maybe I need to start using voice dictation to reply?)

I got kind of sick and tired of working on all my WIPs in obscurity, feeling a bit like I'm doing "nothing" because my painting process is a tree falling in the woods and no one's around to hear it, so I'm just sharing them everywhere I can think of this week, and now you all know that I'm being a fannish little gremlin somewhere out there.
Fanart or not, this is actually a large portfolio revamp so I can go apply to things and make more money. Tired of seeing my savings account depleting.
Trying to bully myself into going to get a new COVID vaccine this evening, but oigjoirgerg I don't wannnaaaaaa... sigh. I'm just being a big baby; now that I've complained about it, I guess I'll go. :\

One thing I always feel DW is missing is an askbox. And I remembered earlier today that there theoretically is a way that I've heard about to get "anons" and "asks" by pinning a post with approval-only comments. Which had me excited, thoroughly, right up until I realized I wouldn't really know what to really DO with that if I set it up. DW isn't very fannish in the grand scheme of things.

Hardware, The Devil

But! Did I successfully connect my two new monitors to my laptop? Also no, lmfao.
I'm not the best at identifying ports, so I just trusted the online manual for my laptop. Turns out I have a funky early model that doesn't actually match the manuals available on Microsoft's site. Hilarious. Monitors come in, and I can't hook them up. Pheewwww. After 2 hours of research, including a brief spiral into "Oh god, what if I can't connect it to my laptop at all? I have to build a PC much sooner than I intended, don't I? Ok, how do I do that?" I figure out my best option for connecting one of the monitors, which is just fine because one of them has output capability, which means I should be able to daisy chain. Ha.
So I run off to the store, get the adapter, hook up the first monitor. Yes! 4k, 60Hz, fantastic. Hook it up to the second monitor, aaaaand the second one isn't showing up. With this NEW question, I go back to google. Reddit pops up and says, "Oh, yeah, you wouldn't happen to have bought this one particular type of monitor, would you? Yeah, it only daisy chains if you have DisplayPort 1.4, and 1.4 only, all along the connection." Pffffff.
So now I have one monitor that's an external display to my laptop and... another that's an external display to my iPad.
Unexpected, but... you know. It works for now. I just have to load all my reference photos onto my iPad instead. It's not the best resolution this way, and it's not convenient, but it's not a brick either, so that's a consolation.
The important thing is that I've finally made progress. I've been so worried about getting the wrong thing that I've delayed this purchase for something like two years now. Which, ehhhh. Now that I did actually get at least one thing that's wrong, I'm not too concerned.
Because I did intend to someday put together a PC, so this gives me a constraint, somewhere to start. I need outputs that would make my ideal monitor setup work. Period. Would have been more of a pain in the ass if I built my PC without any idea of potential problems. And, bonus, this made me realize that I should also look into what a Cintiq needs so that IF I ever buy one, I'll have a PC that has ports available for it.
Editing to add: Dear lord, the new resolution, at this screen size, is so thick and juicy and sexy.
