Fandom Snowflake!
2023-01-21 22:39Update: I'm just updating this entry as a masterpost as I go!
Hi! Time to make a Snowflake post! I haven't been posting and have left a whole slew of unanswered comments in my inbox, but I realllllllly wanted to participate. I hope to have more time to interact with everyone again. 🖤
- Challenge #1: In your own space, update your fandom information!
I updated my pinned post here! Not much changed. Added more about foods I like and put DC as my #1 biggest current fandom over Legacy of Kain.
- Challenge #2: In your own space, write a promo, manifesto or primer for your fave character, ship or fandom.
I have too many feels to put into words, but I think the closest I've ever come to describing my love for characters like Raziel and Jason is this blurb I wrote for a costume swap illustration:
Beautiful bitter murder sons. Unerringly devoted and eager to please. All they wanted in return was for their fathers to love them and keep them close. They would have settled for finding out that their fathers had mourned them.
Idk something about the concept really fucks me up in a good way and makes my brain go brrrrr.
Don't ask me why I adore Kyle. It's something like "He's incredibly hot, and he's so STUPID I want to bludgeon him to death." He doesn't even try to be smart; he knows he's dumb as dirt, he knows everyone else knows, and he doesn't let that get in his way of having a good time. I have never been in love with a dumber, kinder, hotter, more loving man. I couldn't fix him, but he could fix me.
- Challenge #3: In your own space, Scream Into the Void. Get it all out.
I don't really have much to scream about aside from the one big thing. I need to be making more money and I'm not because I have a whole series of insecurities keeping me from chasing the big bucks and that's frustrating. I'll... work on it. Eventually. Maybe when I go flat broke. Following your dreams is confusing and weird and I miss the certainty of an office job, even though I wasn't certain at all at the time either because my job satisfaction was abysmal and I was always waiting for someone to sniff me out for it and fire me. So I guess my problems now are preferable to my problems then. Still. Stable income was nice. The end.
- Challenge #4: In your own space, add something to your fandom’s canon.
I don't have any canon in me at this moment. How about a nice piece of fresh LoK meta instead? I wrote it at the time of Challenge #4 so it feels destined to be linked here.
- Challenge #5: In your own space, tell us about 3 creative/fannish resources, spaces, or communities you use or enjoy. (One or two is fine, especially if you're in a smaller fandom or like many people at the moment, fannishly adrift right now)
Oof, I feel like I had a good one for this last year, but... idk, man. I like the Discord we have going for the Bat Big Bang participants! It's my first server I've joined in years. Well, "joined." I'm running the darn thing, lol. I was very burned out on Discord for a very long time, after a few years of participating in the 24/7 news cycle that was the VLD fandom. But this one feels manageable. I can do this! They're a good crowd, all there for a common goal. So if you're interested in participating in a Batfam-centric year-long fest, maybe I'll see you there.
I hear Birdwatchers is a really fun Robin-loving Discord for Batfam fans, but I'm not in it personally. I can dig out an invite though if anyone's interested. Umm... I really can't be of more help than that. Nothing else is coming to mind. I've just been sticking to my own corner and lurking on my mutuals' pages.
- Challenge #6: In your own space, post the results of your fandom scavenger hunt.
Please bear with me, I'm just going to post one image. Think of it as a scavenger hunt FOR YOU. Like one of those old "I Spy" books, lol

1. A favorite character - Nietzsche counts, right?
2. Something that makes you laugh - Nietzsche definitely counts.
3. A bookshelf - Ta-da!
4. A game or hobby you enjoy - Aside from my bass lurking in its case in the shadowy corner to the left of the amp, you can also see a few string loops holding washi rolls hanging above it. There's... uh... more in the drawers lol
5. Something you find comforting - Honestly, I find my room itself very comforting, ever since I made an effort to make it cozy and illuminated just the way I like it.
6. A TV show or movie you hope more people will watch - Don't talk to me about TV shows right now; I'm very fragile on the topic after 1899 got cancelled.
7. A piece of clothing you love - Sorry, I just don't feel like photographing anything else. Recently, I love ALL my clothing anyway. I gave away all the stuff I didn't care for a long while back.
8. A thing from an old fandom - Not a fandom but behind the two big human anatomy models is a very old oil painting of mine, from back when I did a series of (6"x6") rosebuds aka prolapsed anuses and (4"x4") kisses/lips/tongues. The lips live in my mom's living room because she thinks they're neat (and they are, they're gorgeous!) but she didn't ever want to have to see the rosebuds again lol. I kept my one favorite and trashed the rest. It's a nice series bc it was all done in palette knife the matte oil paints sit on metallic acrylic which shines through. Ok, fine, for fandom, you can also find my set of The Unicorn Chronicles books, which is probably my oldest ongoing fandom. I occasionally make fanart for it still. :) My LoK-loving buddy Justin and I lost our fucking MINDS in college when we discovered the series had finally updated after more than a decade. None of the other guys could understand what the fuck the big deal was. It's just some unicorns, right? WRONG.
9. A thing from a new fandom - I'm currently reading The Name of the Rose! It's in there, I promise. You can find it to the right of Nietzsche.
- Challenge #7: In your own space, interact with a community or a fic.
I discovered littleleotas's fic Cousin Kronk a couple days ago and I'm still losing my entire goddamn mind about it, I love it so much.
- Challenge #8: In your own space, create a quiz or a poll (or tell us your thoughts about answering quizzes/polls).
I made this poll to ask people about their favorite art I did in 2022 and what they think would be fun to see in 2023. :)
- Challenge #9: In your own space, celebrate a personal win from the past year: it can be a list of fanworks you're especially proud of, time you spent in the community, a quality or skill you cultivated in yourself, something you generally feel went well.
I actually got through making this entire crazy full-color 42 page comic this summer. Seems unreal. I also finally made a painting of my personal favorite LoK headcanon, though I ran into a lot of trouble with getting it to the finish line. And I illustrated one of my favorite most yearn-y fics I ever wrote, and it's become my current #1 favorite painting.
- Challenge #10: In your own space, create a fanwork.
I wrote an ode to my favorite games thinking about their best and most timeless qualities. It's a meta about what immersion actually is.
- Challenge #11: In your own space, Talk about your favorite trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme.
You know, recently, I'm almost afraid that I no longer have favorite tropes. Maybe that's a good thing? Time to find out who I am NOW rather than sit around identifying with who I've been, listing off things I used to like on pure momentum. Used to love dubcon and tentacles, and now I don't know. I've been painting a lot of vintage pinups? I've been reading a lot of silly relationship-reveal fics? I'm thankfully no longer in that vague and anxious between-fandoms space, but I'm definitely still going through the process of shedding some baggage. I'm very grateful to have this prompt help me pay attention to where I'm at. I've been stewing in this change without being fully aware of it.
